The original plan for the $100 laptop may have originated with Advanced Micro Devices CEO Hector de Jusus Ruiz's 50x15 Initiative to connect 50% of the world to the Internet by 2015.  This Personal Internet Communicator was planned to cost $185, or $249 with a 15 inch monitor.
